Earlier this week in the most edition of the Cyprus weekly, an article was printed stating the police in Ayia Napa would continue to clamp down on pubs that violated noise restrictions. This is a rather pathetically short sited approach to maintaining order in the bustling summer town of Ayia Napa which is located on the eastern coast of Cyprus.

Police had been reported to have confiscated speakers from certain pubs, these owners now starting to feel that they are the targets of biased police operations. Whilst this is open to speculation one cannot but help feel frustrated by the short sightedness of this sort of operation. Ayia Napa is known for being a holiday town. All activity practically ceases in the winter, shops, hotels, bars and restaurants only open their doors at the start of the summer period. The mood in the town changes and colourful people from all walks of life descend on the town to enjoy its golden sandy beaches, lively bars and pubs and of the, the sun.

These visitors generate alot of revenue for the area and for the few months of summer, the owners of the establishments that service these visitors to Cyprus, should be allowed more levity in going about their business. Cyprus is a tourist destination and because of its strong currency and high cost of living, tourist numbers are dwindling. Instead of embarking on new and exciting projects that will lure customers back to the region, we are more concerned with issues that will only serve to compound the problem.

Many tourists who visit Cyprus either stay in a Cyprus hotel or they may comes as groups and decide on self catering Cyprus Villas. Either way, getting out in the evenings to enjoy the boulevards and the lively atmosphere is something 90% of tourists will want to do. Clamping down on the noise levels especially when the bars are in the main tourist areas is not forward thinking. If one thinks about it for a few seconds, this will only drive visitors away from Cyprus, end of story. They are paying good money to come and enjoy a care free lifestyle for a week or two and we must respect this. If we do not we risk further damaging our tourism infrastructure.

Sure, Cyprus does have some lively beaches, stunning holiday villas and some new lavish hotels such as the Columbia in Pissouri, great local food and stunning weather, but are we able to compete with countries that offer more for less? Probably not, Cyprus is a holiday destination that needs to reinvent itself and quickly or risk becoming a 'has been'.

Let's cater for our tourists, let's give them better service than anywhere else, if they want to party on until the early hours, make provision for them, it's why they have come here for the summer to Ayia Napa!
