Found in the south, this is the second largest city on the island. It
is built between the ancient kingdoms of Curium and Amathus. Boasting
the largest port, Limmasol is one of the major holiday resorts.
Being the wine producing centre of the island, a short trip to the country
side will give you a chance to see the magnificent vineyards grown in
this area.
10 kms from Limassol the impressive 15th centuary Kolossi Castle may be
found. With its 3m thick walls it was built by the knights of St, John
of Jerusalem.
High up on the cliffs overlooking the sea is the Curium archaeological
site.Remains of an ancient Greek temple,an ampitheatre and the ruins of
houses with their superb mosaics still intact make this a well worth visit
to the area. The stadium found here is of the Roman era.
3kms west of Curium is the sanctuary of Apollo Hylates. Although partly
destroyed by an earthquake a small temple and ancient columns still remain.
In Limassol the old port ,musem and the Limassol castle are really worthy
of a visit.
